Surjit Patar, Punjabi Writer

Surjit Singh Patar (January 14, 1945 - May 11, 2024) was an Indian Punjabi writer and poet of Punjabi. His poems enjoy immense popularity with the general public and have won high acclaim from critics. Patar was president of the Punjab Arts Council Chandigarh. Earlier, he had held the office of the President, Punjabi Sahit Academy, Ludhiana. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2012.


Surjit Patar hailed from the village Patar Kalan in the Jalandhar district from which he got his surname. His father name was Harbhajan Singh and mother was Harbhajan Kaur. He had four elder sisters. His father had migrated to Kenya for work and would only return for a short time after every five years. Surjit matriculated from a nearby school. After that, he was admitted as a science student in a college in Kapurthala. But next year, he took up arts. He graduated from Randhir College, Kapurthala and then went on to get a master’s degree from Punjab University, Patiala and then a Ph.D in literature on ‘Transformation of Folklore in Guru Nanak Vani’ from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. He then joined the academic profession and retired as Professor of Punjabi from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.


Surjit Patar started writing poetry in the mid-1960s and he had written on different topics throughout his life and became a very popular writer. He died of cardiac arrest at his residence on Barewal Road in Ludhiana on May 11, 2024, at the age of 79. According to his family members he did not wake up that morning and was declared dead upon arriving in the hospital.
