Bhagat Kabir (1398-1448) was a devotee and spiritual poet who lived in Uttar Pradesh. He was a strict monotheistic and follower, probably the founder of Gurmat. In Guru Granth Sahib of Sikh religion, there are 227 pandas in 17 ragas and 237 slokas of Kabir. Kabir is revered by Sikhs, Muslims, and Hindus. He played the role of a teacher and social reformer by the medium of his writings. He did not believe in ritualism, worshipping of deities, caste system and illusioned concepts of Hindu and Muslim priests. Sikhs also follow the teachings of Kabir, as in Gurmat, Nanak, Kabir, Ravidas, and Bhatt. Sikhs bow before the Guru Granth Sahib which includes the teachings of many who had similar thoughts about God.

Kabir was born into a Muslim family in Benaras and was adopted by a Hindu family, Neeru and his wife Neema, who named him Kabir. Kabir had a son named Kamal and a daughter named Kamli. Though Hindu by tradition, he was Muslim by upbringing. His profession was a weaver.
